Lucile’s and Hiking

Here’s the plan for tomorrow.  We are planning on going to Lucile’s around 8am tomorrow morning.  Following this, we will be heading up north to hike to the top of Grey Rock.  Feel free to come along on all or both.  We will probably grab biscuits from Lucile’s and eat them at the top as a reward for making it up.  : )

Leave a comment if you are interested so we know who to look for/pick up.

Grilling at the Park!

Delicious and nutritious

Delicious, nutritious, AND cute

I’ve spoken with a few of you already, but today is a beautiful day for some grillin’.  I suggest we find our way to City Park at around 3-4 to enjoy in the outdoorsiness of this beautispectaculawesome day.  Alan/young Adam will probably be picking up the food for the event before hand which may include:

  • hamburgers
  • dachshund dogs
  • some sort of pasta/potato salad
  • drinks of a variety similar to drinks you may have had in the past

Who’s in?

Fairness of Russian Roulette

For those of you who weren’t there on Soylent Green Tuesday, we did a few rounds of Russian Roulette to make people drink some weird drink.

We were discussing the two possible ways of doing RR.
1. Spin the cylinder everytime after one shot
2. Spin initially, but no spinning until someone gets shot

It turned out that everyone except me used method 1, thinking that it was fair, but it wasn’t true.

Suppose the revolver has 6 rounds. Then the probability of you getting shot with method 1 is 1/6. However, even if you spin the cylinder each time, the first person to try has the highest probability of losing. This is because the probability of second person being shot is 1/6*5/6, because the first person must miss before second person. This continues and the probability of the 6th person surviving is around 92%.

However, if you do method 2, the probability of survival is 1/6 for anyone. This is because even if the 6th person has 100% probability of shooting himself, the probability of getting to the 6th person is 5/6*4/5*3/4*2/3*1/2=1/6.

So, if we are doing that again, we should use method 2.
However, if you ever end up doing it with a real gun, try to be the last person and use method 1.

Oh, by the way, I never shot myself even though I had the highest chance. Probability can’t be trusted, you know.

Comedy Time… This Saturday, March 21

Hey guys, how was your Saint Patty’s Day celebration? Mine was great. I’ve spent the evening having Irish stew and bread with some of my not quite young friends! :)

The Book of Liz, 8pm

This is a call to all of those who would like to wrap up this break with a two-hour laughing experience. The Book of Liz, a comedy play by Amy Sedaris and David Sedaris, has been showing at the Lincoln Center for about a month now, some of you know. Their last performance is this Saturday, March 21, at 8pm. I’ve attended it before and I’m so excited to attend again just because the cast is very professional and incredibly funny.  I already have two of my non-CS friends down for it so I need your feedback ASAP, say by tomorrow, so that I have the total number of tickets. I’ll buy all the tickets on Friday so that we can sit  together as a group since the tickets are numbered. The tickets are $15 for students and $20 for adults just so you know. You can click on the thumbnails below to get more information. The first takes you to the website and the second opens a pdf of detailed information.

Old Chicago in Downtown, 6pm

We’ve also agreed to have dinner first at Old Chicago of Downtown at 6pm, so that we can walk from there to the Lincoln Center at our own ease.

This is gonna be a great good food, good laugh Saturday.

Growler run monday, soylent green tuesday

soylentpandaThose of you on Facebook already know I’m throwing a Soylent Green  St. Patties Day Party on Tuesday.  For those of you who aren’t here’s your announcement.

Basically the plan is we’ll drink beer, eat cheese, and play some dumb games I came up with, then once sufficiently sloshed we’ll watch “Soylent Green”. If people are up for pizza we can order some at some point too.

Festivities start Tuesday at 6:00.  My apartment is at 258 W. Prospect Rd, #92.  Let me know if you plan on showing.

Growler Run

Before going green I’d like to do a growler run Monday to stock up on goods.

Let me know if you’d like to join in and get some growler’s of your own (if you’d like to donate a growler or two for the party that would be most appreciated).

Also watchmen

Adam, did you manage to get the book from Alan?  Do you think you’ll be done by monday night?

Unless I hear complaints otherwise the plan is to go see watchmen Monday  at 8:30 or 9:55.  Let me know the preferred time.  Unless otherwise stated I’m going to assume I’ll be giving John, Kate, and possibly Adam rides.

Google Interview

Hey guys, have you seen this interview before? It sounded very interesting to me. It even includes an interview question about sort algorithms! (It also related to some of the issues brought up in the early hours of last Beery Friday)
