Tribute to Michael Jackson (1958-2009)

For millions of Generation X, MTV Generation and early Millennials, the weekend was a time of grief and celebration. The Legendary pop singer Michael Jackson passed away at the age of 50, leaving us with all the memories we have from our childhood and teenage years, listening to his songs, and learning our first dance moves watching his music videos.

And for someone like me, who comes from the other side of the globe, Michael Jackson is legendary because he was able to build bridges across languages, cultures, and borders. He gave me and millions outside the States, an amazing image of the US, full of dreams, and aspiration, full of repsect and admiration. It was through his music and lyrics that I learned about many historical American icons like FDR, JFK and MLK, just to name a few. (You could listen to or read the lyrics of ”They Don’t Care About Us” hit, as one clear example of that)

The video above is a very short report from MSNBC coverage of the aftermath.

Gaming

So, I finally got Dokapon Kingdom – anyone up for playing sometime tonight?
It can handle up to 4 players – so far Andy has said he’s interested.
Venue is currently either the basement of my building or my living room – this will depend on how many people there are/whether the basement is currently occupied.
I am also open to moving it if there is strong feeling about it.

On a completely random note:
@ Doug – Books are in my cube – the shelf with the door. They’re on the left side.

Fort Collins Foxes vs. Cheyenne Grizzlies

Here we go Foxes. Here we go!

Here We Go Foxes. Here We Go!

So it turns out that Fort Collins has a baseball team, the Foxes, and they play during the summer. I’m planning to attend their coming home game at the City Park South Ball Field this Friday, June 26, at 6:15pm.

Who’s in?

Irish Festival II: Young Dubliners!

I’ve been there last night and it was so much fun. Especially those Young Dubliners (the band), they made me dance like I’ve never before. They’re gonna play again tonight from 7-8:30, and then there will be The Elders (the band) from 9-11pm (I’m not kiddin’. For some brilliant reason, you get the Young Dubliners and then The Elders in the same evening! :) )

Slainte!

Irish Festival: Got Guinness?

Got Guinness?

Got Guinness?

Kate and I are currently waiting in line at the Fort Collins REI for the Garage Sale where they sell lots of stuff for ridiculously cheap prices.  But that is not the point of this post.  Fort Collins Irish Festival starts today at 10am and runs to 11pm.  Tickets are $10 per day.  Rachael and I saw a band last night that played for free in Old Town square and it was lots of fun.  Anyone interested in joining?  Rachael and I will be going later today, probably around 3 or 4.  She promised me we could get sushi today too, so we could do that too.  Kate has also expressed interested.
Hope to see you there!

What is a Browser?

I guess you don’t need to know the term “web browser” to use one.  Though I have to say, living life in my little CS bubble, I would have guessed the majority of people under 30 would know that browsers and search engines are not the same thing.  If it weren’t for the statistic at the end I would have called it selective editing (although the youtube account is just some guy, not Google, so for all we know the whole thing could be fake). But anyway:

And just in case you can speak Dutch, here’s a similar result in the Netherlands: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEt0N3xu0Do

^^^ Which one is a browser?

Saturday?

Anyone up for some DDR Saturday? (Though I wouldn’t object to some tonight)

I was also hoping to schedule a trip to get electronic bits for it (read: would like a ride) – I’m currently reliant on Jesh’s cords to hook up to the tv, and I’d also like to try to find another mat (it’s much more fun with more people.

As a note: I haven’t been able to find ‘And Then There was Silence’ yet – if you find a pack with it, let me know!

Update: ADMIN NOTE: I upgrade to Wordpress 2.8 and things seemed to get a little wonky.  Not sure what the deal is.  The right menu bar seems to disappear some times.  Try logging in and out and refreshing a few times.  Also, 2.8 allows me to add themes from the admin interface, so maybe I’ll find some new themes and see if everyone likes a different one.  If you feel like looking for themes, let me know if you find any that look nice and we can try them.
