Tuesday

So we haven’t done anything for the past few Tuesdays, which is sad :’(
Anywho, I know all you 520 people are gonna be just off of a potentially painful midterm – are we gonna do anything?
So I was watching Buffy last night (not quite completely addicted yet) and there was a cute little nightmare demon – it reminded me about smaller versions of things being inherently cute. It so held true in this case. Anyways, I wanted to put that up, but I couldn’t find the clip anywhere online.
So, per Eric’s request:

Proof by Buddhist square

To begin, we define \phi(\alpha) in terms of \boldsymbol{d}^{(k)},\boldsymbol{Q},\boldsymbol{g}^{(k)},\textit{pain}, and \textit{suffering}:

\phi(\alpha) = \frac{1}{2}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{Q}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)}\alpha^{2}+\boldsymbol{g}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)}\alpha+ \textit{suffering}\;\alpha+\textit{pain}

Since \phi(\alpha) is a quadratic, we find the minimizer in the usual way:

\frac{d \phi}{d \alpha} =  \boldsymbol{d}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{Q}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)}\alpha + \boldsymbol{g}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)} + \textit{suffering}
0 = \boldsymbol{d}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{Q}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)}\alpha+\boldsymbol{g}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)}+ \textit{suffering}
-\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{Q}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)}\alpha= \boldsymbol{g}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)} + \textit{suffering}
\alpha = -\frac{\boldsymbol{g}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)} + \textit{suffering}}{\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{Q}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)}}

Note the pain disappears but the suffering remains in when taking the first derivative. Now consider taking the second derivative:

\frac{d^2 \phi}{d^2 \alpha}=  \boldsymbol{d}^{(k)\top}\boldsymbol{Q}\boldsymbol{d}^{(k)} +  \textit{suffering}

Inexplicably, it seems, the suffering term remains. This can be explained by one of the lesser known mathematical axioms – Siddhartha’s Axiom – which states that all mathematics is suffering and once you accept that fact mathematics becomes more tolerable. It is an axiom that, despite it’s relative obscurity, is very often put into practice, not leastwise by computer scientists who don’t have the prerequisites to optimization courses offered by engineering departments. \blacksquare

The point of this story is – SCOTCH + CHEESE + TONIGHT = GOTTA HAPPEN

Kate has cheese, a new roommate, probably some beer, we all have scotch. Let us ceremoniously conjoin all of these into a fun-drink-feasting, shall we?

Thoughts?

By the by, I think this is the 51st post on the blag. That’s progress.

Scotch report: Talisker and Bowmore

Last night, after some nachos and a Wilbur’s run we had Bowmore and tried a new scotch: Talisker.

With Bowmore, I stand by our initial conclusions.  It’s an accessible Islay Scotch without the overwhelming smokiness of Laphroaig.

While Bowmore is a gentle vessle to slowly guide you to the refined shores of Islay, Talisker is some other kind of metaphorical boat — one that’s bigger, more agressive, more likely to carry pirates.  But not the scary kind.  No, rather the cool kind.  The kind that drink scotch instead of rum.  Anyway, Talisker is a peppery scotch with characteristics of both the highlands and Islay.

Both have a lot of character and are the perfectly suited for a slow evening of reading papers.

Bowmore 12 year
Color: Dark goldon, coppery
Nose: Peaty
Taste: Dry, peaty
Churchill factor: .5
Location: Islay

Talisker 10 yr:
Color: Amber (red)
Nose: Very defined, slight smokiness
Taste: Slight sweetness, peppery, very sarp
Churchill factor:  2
Location:Isle of Skye

So, what’s the plan for tonight?

What do you guys think?

Scotch report 2/3/09

Today we went to Stonehouse and had some Bowmore.  Its’ a much more accessible scotch than Labhroaig but still maintains the spirit of an Islay scotch.

Bowmore
Color: Light golden
Nose: Smoky with a hint of sweetness
Taste: Much like one would expect from the nose. Not nearly as smoky as Labhroaig.
Churchill factor: 1.5
Location: Islay
ABV: 43%

Scotchy tuesday plan

Current plan: We go to Beaujo’s take advantage of their cheap appetizers (nachos!) than go to Stonehouse to try new drinks.

Next week: Cragganmore and some other drink, either at my place (CasaStone) or John’s (the Batcave). Someone will need to buy a bottle of scotch for this, today we decide who. Either someone volunteers or we’ll Rochambeau for it. If you don’t have a car we can arrange a trip to Wilbur’s.

If you want to join let us know (post to blog so everyone knows). Either meet us at the dept. at 5:00 or plan on meeting us in Old Town.

Current enrolment for Tuesday Scotch 101: Andy and Adam.

If you don’t post by 5:00 expect annoying phone calls to come your way.

Scotchy Tuesdays

Do as the Winston Churchill does.

Do as the Winston Churchill does.

So, as I sit sipping on a delicious single malt highland scotch, I thought to myself “It’s still pretty cold this evening, I had better keep my warm leggings on”.  In Gaelic, as I understand it, this roughly translates into ‘now would be a good time to make the first blog post on scotch so as to better record our scotchy endevours’.  As a matter of fact, the scotch I’m drinking right now is pictured here in the second bottle from the left top.  Strathisla be the name, though it’s up in the air whether it should be pronounced straw-this-lah or straw-thigh-lah or straw-thee-lah or some other scottish pronunciation I can’t being to imagine (boz-atz-ta-bon, kil-ee-kin-eye-vee, etc.)  I added the tag ’scotch’ to this post so when we feel the need to browse all scotch entries it will be easy as this here scotch.  Happy scotching!  Where shall we scotch next?
